Your bat is your first team-mate
In cricket, talent wins battles — but the right bat wins matches. Whether you're stepping onto a gully pitch or a 22-yard turf wicket, the willow in your hands directly shapes your timing, your confidence, and how many runs end up next to your name.
This guide breaks down exactly what to check, what to skip, and how to get the most bat for your money — whether you're buying your first kid's bat or upgrading as a club regular.

How to choose a bat you won't regret
Match the willow grade to your level. Grade 1 English willow is for advanced players who need maximum performance. Grades 3–4 are ideal for club and recreational players at better value.
Pick the right weight for your height and strength. For most adults, 2lb 8oz to 2lb 10oz is the sweet spot — light enough for quick hands, heavy enough to carry through the shot.
Check the blade profile and edges. Modern bats favour thicker edges (38–44mm) and full profiles. Thicker edges mean a larger sweet spot — useful when facing pace or spin off the middle.
Always knock in a new bat. An un-knocked bat will crack on first impact. Use a bat mallet for 4–6 hours before match play, or buy it pre-knocked if you'd rather skip the step.
Grip matters more than you'd think. A worn grip quietly costs you bat control. Replace grips every season — they cost next to nothing and noticeably improve your feel at the crease.
